There are few things in a home that are as important as your furnace. If you live in a cold area the furnace not only keeps yo warm during those cold winter nights, but it also is integral in keeping your home warm so pipes do not freeze. It always seems that a furnace goes out at the most inopportune times. It is important that your furnace does not go out because you could be stuck in a cold house for a day or more. It is best to catch a furnace that is starting to fail, and have it fixed or replaced before the major breakdown. Here are a few signs that your furnace is starting to fail:

Pilot Light

One of the most important things to check is your pilot light. Look at the pilot light and see if it is a yellowish color. If the flame is a yellow color you should call a technician as soon as possible. A yellow light means that your flame is not burning like it should and that it could be leaking carbon monoxide. The problem with this gas is that the body can't utilize carbon monoxide so it can actually suffocate you. Be sure that there are carbon monoxide detectors in your home right by the furnace.

Dust

Be sure that you are cleaning your filters very regularly, and if you start noticing dust coming from the vents there are two likely problems. First, you want to clean out the air ducts in the home. Over time dust and other debris can settle in your air ducts and clog up your vents. This can cause a problem with the circulation in the home but also puts extra strain on the furnace. You may also want to see if the furnace itself is no longer able to filter out the dust. If the dust continues even after cleaning the vents and changing the filter, it is time for a technician to look at your furnace.

Preventative Maintenance

It is no problem to perform a little preventative maintenance on your own furnace, but if you really want your furnace to last it is best to have a technician come each fall and inspect your furnace. A technician will have the skills and the knowledge to know when even a small problem comes up. This way they can fix the small problems before they turn into big problems.

Troubleshooting HVAC Issues

About a year ago, I realized that our air conditioner just wasn't cutting it. Our home was constantly hot and humid, even though our air conditioner was running almost all the time. In addition to driving up our energy bill, my entire family was tired of sweating constantly. To resolve the problem, we decided to hire an HVAC contractor to come out and fix the problem. He figured out that our compressor was damaged, and he replaced it for us. After that, our system ran great again. This blog is here for anyone who has ever had trouble diagnosing air conditioning problems.
