How To Prepare Your Home For AC Installation
You've likely done all your research and secured what you're confident is the right air conditioner for your home. You may also have your appointment set for when the installation crew is going to come and put in your new AC system. You might wonder if you can do anything to facilitate the installation. While the crew will show up with all the tools and supplies they need, you can ease their way.
Below are some steps you can take to make the installation of your new air conditioner run smoothly.
Clear the Area Around the Installation Site
The main unit of your system is likely located outside. It typically sits on a concrete foundation to keep it level. The installation crew will spend some of their time at that site, so clearing that area will be helpful. Remove any branches, hoses, patio décor, or other items located around that site. Likewise, make sure the path from your driveway to the site is free of obstacles.
Clear the Path Inside Your Home
The outside unit connects to an air handler inside the house via copper tubing. The air handler is usually part of your furnace. So, the installation team will need to work around that area, too. What's more, they may need to do some work on your ducts. Make sure the area around the furnace and ducts are clear. If you're worried about dirt, you can put down some drop cloths.
Relocate Your Vehicles
The installation team will typically arrive in a van or truck. They can certainly park on the street. However, if you're so inclined, consider relocating your vehicles so they can park in your driveway. That way, they won't have to carry the new air conditioner and all their supplies quite as far.
Put Pets and Kids in a Safe Place
The installation crew probably won't spend much time in the main part of your house. However, you should still relocate your pets to a room far separated from the installation sites. Definitely don't leave them running around outside as they may interfere with the installation or even get injured. If you have small children, have them stay in their rooms, too.
Disconnect Your Existing Unit
The first step the installation crew will take is to remove your old AC unit. If you want to facilitate that task, disconnect it ahead of time. The disconnect box is usually located on the wall of your house near the AC unit. You'll have to lift the cover and either pull out the tab or flip the switch. You should turn off the power at the circuit breaker for extra security.
