If you wake up and notice that your home feels colder than usual, you might instantly check the thermostat. The thermostat tells you the current temperature in your home. If it reads a low temperature, you might adjust it to turn the furnace on. What happens, though, when the furnace fails to turn on after changing the temperature on your thermostat? When this happens, you might need to contact an HVAC company for furnace repairs. Before you do that, though, you might want to check a few things. Here are several things to check before calling a repair technician.

Check the Thermostat's Setting

A thermostat has several settings, including heat, cool, and off. Is there a chance that the thermostat is set to "off?" If so, move it to the heat setting to see if the furnace comes on. If this does not solve the problem, you can move on to the next step.

Examine the Furnace

If messing around with the thermostat does not help, it might help to examine the furnace. When you look at your furnace, can you see any issues that might be preventing it from working? You can examine the pilot light if your system has one. If it does, you might need to get on the ground to see if it is lit. If it is not lit, this is likely the issue preventing your system from working. You might also want to check the air filter. If you have not changed it in months, it might be dirty. While this does not typically cause a furnace to stop working, it can affect its efficiency.

Look at the Electrical Panel

Another thing you can do is check the electrical panel. If, for some reason, the fuse for the furnace tripped, your furnace will not be able to turn on until you fix the breaker. If possible, turn the breaker off and then back on to see if this makes a difference with your furnace.

Call a Furnace Repair Company

After completing these steps, you will either have a working furnace or not. If it works, you have solved the problem. If not, you can contact a furnace repair company to request services. They will come to your home to fix the problem. They can diagnose the issue and make all the necessary repairs to get your home warm once again.

About Me
Troubleshooting HVAC Issues

About a year ago, I realized that our air conditioner just wasn't cutting it. Our home was constantly hot and humid, even though our air conditioner was running almost all the time. In addition to driving up our energy bill, my entire family was tired of sweating constantly. To resolve the problem, we decided to hire an HVAC contractor to come out and fix the problem. He figured out that our compressor was damaged, and he replaced it for us. After that, our system ran great again. This blog is here for anyone who has ever had trouble diagnosing air conditioning problems.
